The Captain’s Cottage

The Captain's Cottage

Family and Group Weekend Retreat

Our unique Captain’s Cottage is available for hire on weekends.

The property’s original and unpretentious farmhouse was, at one time, home to Captain Bill Drage, one of the River Murray’s last paddle-steamer captains.

Jim has sympathetically restored the buildings with consideration and authenticity. It is ideal for 2-5 people who love history, nature, free access to kayaks and trails AND appreciate the quirkiness of having amenities in rustic out-buildings.

Within minutes of Renmark-Paringa, our property sits on the Murray River with easy creek access.

The Captain’s Cottage is 350m from the Murray River, consisting of the original farmhouse and its out-buildings.

Hire includes:

  • From 12 noon on Friday to 3pm Sunday (extra nights on long weekends)
  • Unlimited kayak & canoe use with easy access to kayak trails

Perfectly situated on the Murray River, opposite the Murray River National Park and adjacent Woolenook Forest Reserve, there are several different creek trails to explore from our private  launchsite.

  • Two bedrooms with queen beds (and linen)
  • Double sofa bed (no linen)
  • Large living room with ceiling fans
  • Air conditioning in all three rooms
  • Kitchenette with fridge and electric kettle
  • Spacious comfortable verandah

Outside Area

Extra Considerations

Fruit and Vegetables

Please note that, as a food production area, Renmark is fruit-fly free. It is currently illegal to bring ANY fruit or vegetables into the Riverland, even from Adelaide. There are plenty of great places to buy fresh produce within the Riverland.

Busy Periods

Some times are not always peaceful on the river: Despite our relatively secluded position, the river will be very busy on long weekends and school holidays.

Cancellations and Refunds

A full refund will be made for any bookings cancelled in writing up to the Saturday before check-in (check-in being by 12 noon on Friday, the first day of your booking).

There is a 50% refund if your booking is cancelled within 7 days of check-in. There is no refund if cancellation is made within 48hrs of check-in.

Coronavirus Precautions

We are fully vaccinated and hold ‘COVID-19 Clean Practicing Business’ accreditation through the Quality Tourism Framework. We are currently requiring our guests to be fully vaccinated against Covid-19. This significantly reduces the risks of transmission.

Visitors are required to consider in advance as to whether they have any covid symptoms or have been in contact with anyone infected with COVID-19. If so, we request they contact us to defer their visit until they have been asymptomatic for 10 days or can provide a clearance letter from a physician.

We are happy to reschedule their visit to a future date.
